Twenty years ago today, cancer patient Bob Dent put an end to his suffering.
The ACT Liberal Democrats believe in the inalienable right of individuals to end their lives painlessly, at a time of their choosing, and to be legally able to obtain information and assistance to do so with dignity.
Senator David Leyonhjelm has introduced a private Senator's bill to repeal the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 - the 'Andrews Bill'.
With the New South Wales Senate count finally completed, we are thrilled to confirm that David Leyonhjelm - Liberal Democrats Senator for NSW will be returning for another term.
High hopes for Gabriel Buckley - Liberal Democrats QLD, who ran a stellar campaign, were dashed when he was nudged out at the last moment by One Nation.
The double dissolution was supposed to "clear out the cross bench". In reality, the government will now have to negotiate with an even larger and less manageable cross bench.
We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to all of our supporters, volunteers, and donors for helping us succeed. Your efforts ensured that the Liberal Democrats will remain the voice of small government and individual liberty in the Senate.
No matter what happens over the next three years, you can rest assured knowing that the Liberal Democrats will never vote for an increase in taxes, and we will never vote for a reduction in liberty.
Canberra leads the world in silly e-cig restrictions
Earlier this year the ACT Government announced that the territory would impose some of the most severe restrictions on e-cigarettes in the world. This approach, however, runs contrary to the evidence-based approach of many other western nations where e-cigs are rightly regarded as a significant opportunity to minimise the harmful effects of tobacco. As your voice for evidence-based policy, the ACT Liberal Democrats strongly oppose these draconian and short-sighted restrictions.
The ACT Liberal Democrats fully support the sale and use of nicotine-containing liquids for e-cigarettes with evidence-based regulation. Unlike the ACT Government, we do not consider it is appropriate to treat e-cigarettes the same as normal tobacco products. Whether they are used for enjoyment or as an aid to help People stop smoking, the evidence clearly shows that vaping is a substantially healthier alternative. The Royal College of Physicians has stated that the hazard to health arising from long-term vapour inhalation from the e-cigarettes available today is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco. 1
We find it bizarre that the ACT Government has chosen to demonise e-cigarettes and to ban the sale of nicotine-based liquids. It is true that nicotine is a potentially dangerous poison, especially in a concentrated liquid form. Hence, we recognise that there may be a case for regulation to reduce direct and indirect adverse effects of e-cigarette use, but this regulation should not be allowed to significantly inhibit the development and use of harm-reduction products by smokers. Any regulatory strategy should, therefore, take an informed and balanced approach in seeking to ensure product safety while respecting the rights of consumers.
We currently find ourselves in the strange situation where it is illegal to sell liquids containing nicotine, but it is perfectly legal to use and it is perfectly legal to import. So our Government intentionally lets foreign online businesses do the exact thing that they ban Australian businesses from doing.
Just as the Liberal Demcrates fully support people's right to smoke, we also support people's right to vape.
